IDM MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

May is a busy month for the ICM.  This year’s focus for International Day of the Midwife (5th of May) is the partnership between midwives, mothers, and families, and we’ve received inspiring insights into what that means from our Member Associations, our Global Goodwill Ambassador, and a number of midwives and women from around the world.

Advocacy is the word on our lips this month, and we have championed the role – and the name – of midwives during consultation with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and key partners about its revised definition of Skilled Attendant at Birth.  We believe that it’s time to take a stand and affirm that only midwives practise midwifery and that only midwives are educationally prepared to provide maternal and newborn health care across the childbirth continuum, and for this well-overdue reality to be recognised.

We will be attending the World Health Assembly in Geneva in late May, where we hope to contribute our insights into the important role midwives can play in reproductive and sexual health frameworks for the benefit of adolescents. Immediately following this, I will be flying to Barcelona to attend the Congress of our partner, the International Confederation of Nurses.  And then comes our very own Congress in Toronto, which is shaping up to be an immersive and exciting affair.

For those of you attending our Congress: I look forward to seeing you there.  To those unable to make it on this occasion: contribute to the conversation through our social media – Facebook and Twitter. And today – enjoy and celebrate and take pride in the wonderful and important work you do in partnership with women and their families.

IDM MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am delighted to wish all our Member Associations, partners and friends of midwives a Happy International Day of the Midwife. IDM is very important day, we do this because we want to recognize midwives, we want to share with others what we do and what impacts we have under the outcome of women and babies.

Midwives, mothers and families are partners for life.

President, International Confederation of Midwives
